| Greetings / Grußwort Dear colleagues, for the first time the 5th vitreoretinal Symposium and the 15th annual meeting of die German Retina Society will be organised as a joint meeting. Prof. Dr. Frank Koch and I agreed to have a completely different topic compared to previous vitreoretinal symposia. The present discussion about the use of embryonic stem-cell research encouraged us to choose the topic Blindness - a challenge. The key issue of this meeting will be science for low vision and new treatment concepts to prevent blindness. We will attempt to answer questions, such as how visual functions may be achieved in congenital and acquired blindness with a different cortical plasticity, as well as the question whether the retinal chip, the functional regeneration of vision, neuroretinal transplantation, gene technology as well as retinal stem-cells transplantation or a combination of both, may be a goal of further intensive research. A hopefully lively round-table discussion at the end of each presentation will help to inform affected patients and the public on the present state of the art of research; outline future trends and destroy illusions. Although our chosen topic differs from previous meetings, the popular vitreoretinal Wet-Labs for young and experienced surgeons will be continued. The industry will present their latest innovations at the meeting. We are glad to welcome you in Marburg! Yours sincerely Prof. Dr. Frank H.J. Koch Prof. Dr. Peter Kroll
