Vascular AMD

Ranibizumab (Lucentis) for Subfoveal Choroidal
Neovascularization (CNV) in Neovascular Age-Related
Macular Degeneration (AMD) Patients
Andrew A. Moshfeghi, P. J. Rosenfeld (Miami)
Purpose: To review the clinical trial results of the FOCUS, MARINA, and ANCHOR data for
ranibizumab (Lucentis) in the treatment of subfoveal choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in
neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) patients.
Methods/Results: An analysis of all available ranibizumab data for the treatment of subfoveal
CNV due to AMD will be carried out. This discussion will be placed in the context of widespread
off-label use of intravitreal bevacizumab (Avastin) for the treatment of neovascular AMD.
Conclusions: Ranibizumab is effective at preventing moderate visual loss in approximately
95% of patients at one year. Approximately 1/3 of patients gain 3 or more lines of visual acuity
at the end of year of therapy. No serious ocular or systemic safety signals have been identified with its use.
