ILM Removal: 20 Years Experience

After having discovered in 1987 for MEM, in 1991 for MH and in 2000 for CME that ILM
Removal gives a higher improvement than vitrectomy with posterior hyaloid removal alone, the
authors, upon pathological studies, try to give their explanation on “How does ILM Removal
work”. The improvement does not seem to be linked to the removal of a pathologic process but
rather to the induction of a cellular retinal response at the level of the Muller cells.
